Augmentation to the cheek and chin using implants can greatly enhance the appearance of the face. Previously used for facial reconstruction as a result of birth defects, trauma, illness or previous surgery, they are now being used for cosmetic improvements.
The bones in the chin may need to be brought forward or bone grafts used to reshape the chin area. It is also possible to perform a chin reduction if the chin is overly prominent.
Men and women that want to achieve a more pleasing or more youthful, rounded appearance to the cheeks can benefit greatly from a cheek augmentation with implants. Alternatives include fat transfer or temporary dermal fillers.
The appearance of the chin can be greatly improved, either by augmenting with implants, fillers or fat transfer or reducing the appearance of an overly-prominent chin that is causing imbalance to your facial features.
During your consultation, Mr Afshin Yousefpour will listen carefully to your concerns relating to your facial appearance. He will also perform a careful physical examination, before offering treatment options, explaining the benefits and potential risks so you can make an informed decision.
All swelling should finally disappear a few months after surgery so your final results will be revealed. A cheek or chin augmentation with implants can make a dramatic difference to facial appearance and most patients are very satisfied with their results.
The procedure can take anything from thirty minutes to two hours depending on the extent of the procedure. It is typically performed under local anaesthetic with a sedative, but a general anaesthetic may be required.
During a cheek augmentation, Mr Yousefpour will make a pocket over the cheekbone and insert an implant through the inside of the mouth or by making an incision just under the lower lashline. The implant can either be placed high on the cheekbone or in the mid-cheek region, depending on the effect you wish to achieve.
The chin implant can be inserted either through an incision inside the mouth or just under the chin. The latter will leave a small scar, but it is not usually noticeable afterwards.
There is usually a degree of swelling and some discomfort after a cheek and chin augmentation and it can take a little while to get used to the implants, particularly if screws are used to hold the implants in place. However, most patients can return to work and normal activities after a week.
There may be some numbness caused by nerve damage, but normal sensation should return within a couple of months. There is the risk of infection, haematoma or seroma after a cheek or chin augmentation, but you will be carefully monitored by Mr Yousefpour at follow-up appointments to ensure all is well.
Capsular contracture can sometimes occur, a common occurrence after a breast augmentation with an implant. The body reacts to the implant by encasing it in scar tissue which can harden and contract, changing the shape of the implant.
